Day Trip Details
You'll be picked up from your hotel in Chennai at 9 am. From there we'll set off for one of the most legendary locations on the east coast of India, Mahabalipuram, two hours away.
Once there, we'll begin to discover its monumental complex, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first stop will be at one of the most famous sanctuaries, the 8th century Coastal Temple. This sacred precinct houses three shrines, one dedicated to Vishnu and two to Shiva. Did you know that it is one of the oldest five-storey structures in India?
The tour will continue to the five temples of Pancha Rathas. All these constructions, carved out of huge granite blocks, are attributed with a very particular sacred character. For example, in 2004 a huge tsunami hit the coast of the Bay of Bengal and the Pancha Rathas survived the catastrophe.
After a break for lunch on your own, we'll contemplate the bas-reliefs of the temple of Sri Sthal Sayana Perumal. These scenes depict two very important stories in Hinduism, the descent of the Ganges and the penance of Arjuna. Do you know what they are about? We'll find out!
