Evening Tour of Chiang Mai's Temples
On the day of the activity, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Chang Mai, and from here, we'll set off on a tour of Chiang Mai's most stunning temples.
First, we'll drive for about 40 minutes to head to Doi Suthep, a mountain that holds great religious significance. This mountain is home to the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a revered temple and a major pilgrimage destination. Here, you'll admire its impressive golden stupa, which you can reach by climbing the intricately designed Naga staircase of 306 steps or by taking the cable car. The serpent-like sculptures on the staircase are a distinctive and memorable feature of the temple.
Once at the top, you'll find a sculpture of a white elephant, commemorating the story behind the temple's placement. According to legend, the elephant climbed up the mountain, trumpeted three times, then dropped dead, which was interpreted as an omen.
As you explore the surrounding area of the temple, we'll tell you about its rich history and architecture. From the temple's viewpoint, you can take in stunning views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside. Don't forget to take a picture!
Then, we'll journey for about 30 minutes to head to our next temple, located at the foot of the Doi Suthep mountain range: Wat Umong Suan Puthatham. Nestled in the greenery of the mountain, this temple is the only forest temple in the Chiang Mai region.
This 700-year-old temple is famous for its ancient tunnels and large chedi, which you can explore. You'll also find proverbs written in Thai and English hanging from the trees on the footpaths leading to the pond with fish, turtles, and ducks. Did you know it also has a library-museum? Inside are many books on Buddhism and other philosophies, as well as a collection of historic objects and Buddhist art.
Finally, we'll conclude our tour and take you back to the starting point, where we'll arrive after a total of 4 hours.
