After picking you up at your hotel in Chiclayo at the appointed time, we'll drive south to the agricultural village of Zaña. Did you know that in the 17th century, this village was known as “the Seville of Peru”?
After about an hour's drive, we'll reach our destination, founded by the Spaniards under the name of Villa Santiago de Miraflores de Zaña.
Upon arrival, we'll set off on a guided tour of Zaña, visiting the remains of the convents of San Agustín and San Francisco, as well as the portico of the church of La Merced. We'll also see the ruins of the walls, columns, arches, vaults, and galleries that once formed part of the town's colonial temples and mansions. A journey into the past!
Zaña was a prosperous city that also attracted immigrants from Japan and China in search of work in the sugar cane plantations. It's believed that the city was on the verge of becoming the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru because of the importance it acquired. However, the city was razed to the ground by the pirate Edward Davis in the 17th century.
